Hello,
This month we are talking about things that could be sabotaging your weight management.
What is sabotaging your weight loss plan?
Eating healthy and exercise are key components to a weight loss plan but did you know that other factors may be preventing you from losing weight?
Stress increases the hormone cortisol which in turn increases insulin. Insulin is responsible for driving sugar into cells to use for energy. But large amount of insulin can cause weight gain because insulin promotes the storage of fat. If the body continues to produce large amount of insulin in response to stress and food, insulin resistance develops, where more insulin is released in response to high glucose but the cells are resistant and are not able to drive sugar into the cells. With mounting levels of sugar and nowhere to go, the body converts the sugar into fat as storage.
As cortisol goes up, serotonin, our happy hormone can go down. This can lead to the feeling of anxiety, depression and craving for carbohydrates and sweets. Low serotonin can also affect melatonin and sleep patterns. And poor sleep lowers leptin (the hormone that suppresses appetite) and ghrelin (the hormone that increases hunger ). So, dysfunctional sleep can cause food cravings and feeling of hunger as well.
Stress also reduces the conversion of inactive thyroid hormone to the active thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is responsible for regulating metabolism in the body. With sluggish thyroid function, metabolism can slow down and cause more carbohydrates and fats from the diet to be stored as body fat.
There is an intimate relationship between sleep, stress and hormones that affect the body’s ability to lose and maintain weight.
There is growing evidence that the microbiome, the bugs especially in your gut can affect different facets of overall health. Particularly, an imbalance of gut microbes can contribute to weight gain. Changes in the microbiome can negatively affect how the body utilizes fat, carbohydrates and proteins. Additionally, gut microbes may be involved in appetite regulation and GI inflammation.
Eating GMO foods and non-organic foods can also contribute to weight gain by impairing digestion and contributing to food allergies and intolerances.
Accumulation of toxins such as phthalates, pesticides, herbicides and others contribute to weight gain as well. In this case, the body can increase fat production as a place for the toxins to sequester.
